Monterrey Bay is one of the newer squads to have joined the USL and are probably mostly remembered by Louisville City fans for their shocking upset over the boys in purple in their inaugural campaign. LouCity did set the record straight the following season. However, the head-to-head split was not what may have had some fans on edge. Beach Night had become infamous with OG LouCity fans for being a cursed theme night. That theme was making its return for this match. And after the results of this match, I think we can leave the drama surrounding beach night in the rearview mirror.
“We were pretty tired of the wins and losses back and forth but in the end, it’s about sticking to the progress. I thought we came out with the right mentality — the right energy.” Big picture, Coach Danny Cruz saw much of what he would have expected from his squad in this match against a fringe-playoff team. On the heels of a thrilling win, Morados was interested in making this one a positive result minus the late drama. Jake “The Snake” Morris (thanks for that one, Matt Dalton) started the ̶p̶a̶r̶t̶y̶ lūʻau only three minutes into the match, with Wilson Harris stoking the flames of excitement even further minutes later. MB did add a little bit of edge to the match by scoring one of their own at 24’. But Elijah Wynder quickly helped his team to re-widen the margin. Sam Gleadle, formerly of Monterrey Bay, was the last to score, putting the final scoreline at 4-1. Not a bad outing considering the cursed match theme the squad had to endure.
Numerically, this match is much of what you would expect from this stellar 2024 squad, including twice as many shots as the opposition and nearly 1.2 more expected goals generated by LouCity. Although the goals came from various sources, the assists were less diverse. Aiden McFadden continues to become a more and more critical piece to Louisville City’s success. He has consistently gotten better since joining the squad shortly after the start of the regular season. Playing in the all-important outside back role, a lot of weight has been on his shoulders. And he has had no issues bearing that weight. This match saw him provide two assists in the first ten minutes. He has been a standout on each team that he has been a part of the past few seasons and it’s been no difference here.
While Louisville City was burying Monterrey, Tampa Bay did the team a solid and secured a win over the Battery. Charleston’s loss now puts Louisville one point ahead with two matches in hand. All around, a good night for LouCity fans. What more can you say? The team got their job done and results elsewhere has helped them to get more control over their fate. Because I am a sucker for quotes complimentary of our fans, I’ll leave you with this one from Jake The Snake; “Coming and getting two wins in a row at home, being back at home with the fans, the amazing atmosphere – we all love it. Best (home atmosphere) in the league, and we don’t take it for granted.”
