The previous check-in on Louisville City's 2026 season was one of pessimism. That pessimism has been replaced with hope after LouCity managed to make it to the USL Cup Final and win it all. They have become the first club to have won the USL Championship title, the Players' Shield, and the USL Cup. And with the following regular-season win securing their 12th straight trip to the playoffs, there is suddenly reason to believe.

Since September, Louisville has three wins, three draws, and a single loss in all competitions. A draw in Rhode Island was followed by yet another win via penalty kicks in the USL Cup. This was unfortunately followed by a home loss to El Paso, in which the boys in purple fired off twice as many shots as the visitors but failed to secure the three points. LouCity was back to its winning ways against Loudoun with a come from behind win after conceding in the first five minutes. The team then played Hartford twice. The first meeting was a weird regular-season draw: three of the four goals were scored via penalty kicks. However, Louisville got the last laugh when it won the following meeting 1-0. Aiden McFadden scored in the 12th minute, and LOU weathered a 17-shot storm to lift its first USL Cup. With renewed confidence, the boys in purple went to Charleston and earned a big three points with a 2-0 win to secure their spot in the playoffs.

At this point in the season, there are not going to be any massive shifts in the statistical averages. Offensively, they have been solid: fifth-most goals for, along with the most shots on target per match, and fifth-most big chances created. Defensively, as previously established, things have not been ideal, with the boys in purple way down in 18th for goals against. In search of some statistical redeeming qualities to accompany my renewed optimism, I took a look at the averages from halfway through the season to the present. This unintentionally painted a picture of declining performance, with everything but goals for per game regressing. After the conclusion of the season, we'll take a closer look at the numbers.

The overarching theme of this season has been the squad's inability to live up to the lofty expectations set by the previous two seasons. However, lifting the USL Cup changes things. While not all of their victories were pretty or overly convincing, they ultimately got the job done. Their ability to survive and advance has been a stark reminder that grit and momentum are all that is needed in the postseason. Louisville City has already punched its ticket. The statistical shortcomings of the regular season mean nothing in the playoffs. If they can do it in the USL Cup, why not the playoffs? Winning that trophy has redefined how this season will be remembered and given fans hope. Let's hope they can carry this positive momentum into the playoffs and give us a postseason run to remember.
